Indigenous Peoples Statement Calling for the Abolition of School Police in LAUSD and to Establish Independent Truth, Justice and Dignity in Education Commission

Acknowledging the Honuukvetam (Ancestors), ‘Ahiihirom (Elders) and ‘Eyoohiinkem (our relatives/relations) past, present and emerging of the original peoples of the Gabrieliño Tovaangar, Fernandeño Tatavium, and Chumash territories of what is now known as the greater Los Angeles area, we the undersigned representatives of Indigenous organizations write to you in support of The Civil Rights Resolution titled “Reimagining School Safety and Investing in Our Highest Need Students” (Res-050- 19/20). We strongly urge you to vote Yes on this resolution as you consider the ways the LAUSD perpetuates systemic racism from policing to policy to pedagogy. We stand with the Black Lives Matter LA and their call for the abolition of policing in government schools.
