Together, we made history

STATEMENT BY Chrissie Castro, Commissioner, Los Angeles Native American Indian Commission

Thank you so much for each and every hearing you attended, social media post you shared, person you spoke to, phone call you made, councilmember office you visited, and testimony you provided. Because of each and every one of your efforts, we made history in the city of Los Angeles.

We successfully replaced Columbus Day with Indigenous Peoples Day in the second-largest city in the nation.

As you have seen in the local and national news, the whole country has taken notice. This speaks volumes to the urgent need we have in these political times for truth and justice to prevail over oppression. This win has contributed to Indigenous Peoples being seen and recognized, re-shaping a public narrative that has ignored Indigenous Peoples for too long.

People are asking, what's next? There have been a lot of great ideas circulating. We'd like to invite you to a community public forum to discuss this collectively.
